First published at Shaping Australia Awards.

Developed by the Centre for Disability Studies at the University of Sydney, uni 2 beyond offers individuals with intellectual disabilities a two-year university experience. Students attend lectures, participate in tutorials and engage in campus life alongside their peers, supported by peer mentors. While students do not receive formal qualifications, uni 2 beyond empowers students to set personal learning goals, develop valuable skills and form lasting social connections.

Since its launch, uni 2 beyond has transformed lives, offering participants opportunities to enhance their independence, self-determination and social networks. It also fosters a more inclusive environment for the entire university community.

With continued support from the JACE Foundation, the program paves the way for a more inclusive future in education, challenging outdated perceptions about the capabilities of people with intellectual disabilities.

This initiative is one of the five finalists for the 2024 Shaping Australia Awards community champion category. You can show your support for this project and vote for them here.

Voting for the People's choice award closes on Sunday, 19 January 2025.
