Key points:

  • ACU has launched a pilot program that allows high school students to complete foundation studies at university in Year 11 and 12
  • The program offers a supported pathway into university study beyond the traditional ATAR-only model
  • The foundation studies curriculum at ACU spans English and Academic Skills, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Law and Business units

ACU has launched the pilot program with Salesian College Sunbury, north-west of Melbourne.

From 2027, selected senior students at the College will have the opportunity to experience university while finishing high school.

The program is designed to provide an alternative entry pathway into ACU undergraduate courses, helping students build the academic confidence, capability and skills required for future tertiary study.

Through the agreement, eligible Salesian College Sunbury students will enrol in ACU Foundation Studies while remaining full-time high school students. The program will be delivered online with on-site support, allowing senior students to prepare for university while continuing their secondary education.

ACU Director of Education Pathways, Ms Marta Spes-Skrbis, said the initiative reflected ACU’s commitment to offering diverse pathways into tertiary education.

“For many students, stepping into a university environment while they’re still at school can be life-changing,” Ms Spes-Skrbis said.

“It helps them see university as an achievable next step. They learn how to approach university-level assignments, manage their time and take greater ownership of their studies.

“This program will help students recognise their own potential.”

Salesian College Sunbury Principal Mark Brockhus said the program would give students an early experience of tertiary learning within a familiar and supportive school environment.

“This partnership with ACU provides another meaningful option for our students, particularly those seeking a supported pathway into university study beyond a traditional ATAR-only model,” Mr Brockhus said.

“It is an exciting step forward in how we prepare young people for learning, work and life beyond school.”

ACU’s Foundation Studies Program is designed to help students build the knowledge, skills and confidence to succeed at undergraduate level. It provides a pathway to ACU undergraduate degrees and supports students through personalised assistance, access to learning resources and preparation for the academic expectations of university study.
